What AFRC published

On 28 October 2026, the Accounting and Financial Reporting Council (AFRC) published Audit Focus for 2026 year-end audits, setting engagement- and firm-level inspection priorities for 2027–28. Firms are encouraged to apply these priorities when auditing financial statements for periods ending on or after 31 December 2026.

AFRC notes progress on systems of quality management (SoQM), but inspections still find recurring deficiencies in fraud-risk areas, revenue recognition, impairment and going concern. Priorities are drawn from completed inspection cycles and 2026–27 work to date.

Engagement-level priorities

  • Significant / unusual transactions — professional scepticism on business rationale and commercial substance (HKSA 240), including fraud indicators and management override risks.
  • Revenue recognition — fraud presumption in revenue; particular concern for revenue recognised over time (e.g. construction).
  • Impairment of assets / ECL — critical evaluation of methods, assumptions, data and possible management bias (HKSA 540 Revised).
  • Opening balances on initial audits — sufficient evidence under HKSA 510; first-year PIE audits have been more likely to receive unsatisfactory quality ratings.
  • Oversight of component auditors — real involvement under HKSA 600 (Revised): direction, supervision and review, not boilerplate instructions alone.

Going concern remains a key focus. Read this Focus together with the 8 October 2026 joint statement by AFRC, the SFC and the Stock Exchange on going-concern assessments and related disclosures.

Firm-level priorities

  • Client / engagement acceptance and continuance — including risks from low-ball fees or late appointments close to year-end (HKSQM 1).
  • Root-cause analysis and remediation — address why deficiencies recur, not only symptoms.
  • Adoption and use of AI — governance, controls and human oversight so AI supports quality under HKSQM 1; AI does not reduce responsibility for judgements and conclusions.

Scope reminder

These priorities are not exhaustive. They do not limit AFRC inspections or replace applicable professional standards. Auditors must still exercise professional judgement on each engagement. General information only (E&OE); not audit or legal advice. See AFRC’s PDF and publications page.
